In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and nutrition, foods are often categorized by their "nature" or "thermal properties"—ranging from Cold to Hot. This isn't about the temperature of the food when you eat it, but rather the effect it has on your body’s internal balance.
Here is a breakdown of common fruits and vegetables categorized by their thermal properties:
🌶️ Hot & Warm (Yang)
These foods help improve circulation, dispel "coldness" in the body, and support a sluggish metabolism.
• Meats: Lamb (hottest), Mutton, Venison, Chicken, Beef(warm).
• Vegetables: Chili peppers, dried ginger, leeks, onions, garlic, chives and scallions.
• Fruits: Durian(hottest), lychees, longans, and cherries.

⚖️ Neutral (Balanced)
These are stable and grounding. They are generally suitable for everyone, regardless of body type or the season.
• Meats: Pork, Duck (mildly neutral/cool), Pigeon, and most types of White Fish (like Carp).
• Vegetables: Carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, cabbage, mushrooms, and black fungus.
• Fruits: Apples, grapes, figs, passionfruit, papayas, raspberries, guavas and lemons.

🧊 Cool & Cold (Yin)
These foods help clear internal heat, reduce inflammation, and "cool down" the blood. Ideal if you feel "feverish."
• Meats: Rabbit, Crab, Clams, Oysters, seawater fish and Seaweed-based proteins.
• Cool Vegetables: Celery, eggplant, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, and cucumber.
• Cold Vegetables: Bitter melon, seaweed, kelp, bamboo shoots, and lotus root.
• Cool Fruits: Pears, bananas, strawberries, oranges.
• Cold Fruits: Watermelon, kiwis, pomelo, grapefruit, and persimmon.

How to Use This Guide
1. Listen to Your Body: If you often feel cold or have weak digestion, focus more on the Warm and Neutral categories (like lamb or chicken). If your are having flareups, go for cool food for a while.
2. Balance is Key: NEVER eat only one category! Your body’s more complicated than you think. The key is to maintain balance, e.g. If you’re eating a "Cold" seafood dish like crab, it is a long-standing tradition to pair it with "Warm" ginger or rice wine to balance the energy.
3. Processed foods with the following characteristics are all considered hot in a bad way(Do not eat this kind of hot food in an attempt to balance out other cold-natured foods).
● Deep-Fried Foods: Items like fried chicken and potato chips are cooked at extremely high temperatures. In traditional Chinese medicine, this makes them inherently “hot” and drying, which depletes your body’s fluids and often leads to sore throats or acne breakouts.
● High-Sugar & High-Salt Foods: Think sugary desserts and processed meats like ham or sausages. Too much salt dehydrates you (hello, dry mouth), while excess sugar spikes insulin and sebum production, directly worsening inflammation and breakouts.
● Low-Fiber Refined Carbs: White bread, cookies, and other heavily refined grains lack the fiber needed to keep your digestion moving. This sluggishness and resulting constipation are classic triggers for internal heat.
● Trans Fat Heavyweights: Pastries made with margarine or shortening are double trouble. These artificial trans fats don’t just add empty calories; they actively trigger inflammatory proteins in your body, putting your system in a constant state of inflammation.
